Underground Mining

Underground coal mining is used to recover coal well below the surface.

The mine is initially developed using electrically powered continuous miners and shuttle cars to prepare panels of coal for longwall mining.
Parallel roadways or headings are cut through the coal from the main or trunk roadways into the mine. These roadways are joined at the end of the coal block to form the starting face of the longwall.
Longwall mining is the most efficient mining method of extracting coal from an underground mine. The longwall's major components consist of shields, shearer, armoured face conveyor, beam stage loader and service equipment required by the longwall during its operation.  Mined coal is loaded onto a conveyor system which delivers the coal to the surface.

Personnel working in an underground coal mine must be conversant with the standards and procedures developed by the mine and follow safe work practices while underground.

Inductions that incorporate video training present this information effectively and allow visitors to observe the conditions and equipment that they will encounter when they enter the mine.

Work instruction videos are capable of allowing personnel to observe the process and procedures they must follow when carrying out a task.
